What Does It Really Mean to Live a Life Without Lack?
Most of us know what it feels like to live with a sense of lack.
- Not enough money.
- Not enough time.
- Not enough energy.
- Not enough peace.
Even when life is going well, it’s easy to slip into the mindset that there’s always something missing.
A Beautiful Promise
But then there’s this beautiful promise in Psalm 23:
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
For years I read those words as a comforting verse. Lately, I’ve been wondering if they’re actually an invitation.
What if God isn’t just promising to meet our needs someday? What if He’s inviting us to live differently today?
The Absence of Panic
When Jesus began His ministry, He didn’t simply tell people how to get to heaven after they died. He announced that the Kingdom of God was available now. He invited ordinary people into a completely different way of living—one where God Himself becomes our source.
That doesn’t mean life suddenly becomes easy.
Jesus still faced storms, hungry crowds, betrayal, impossible situations, and constant opposition. The difference wasn’t the absence of problems—it was the absence of panic.
He never lived from fear because He never lost sight of His Father as Provider.
A Honest Evaluation
That challenges me.
How often do I rely on my own strength before I ever stop to ask God for His wisdom? How often do I carry worries that were never mine to carry?
One question from a recent teaching has stayed with me:
“Who am I trusting right now?”
It’s a simple question, but an honest answer can reveal a lot.
- Am I trusting my own ability?
- My bank account?
- My circumstances?
- Or am I trusting the One who promises to shepherd me?
Becoming a Channel
Living without lack isn’t pretending we don’t have real needs. It’s choosing to believe that God’s resources are greater than our limitations.
One illustration compared people to three rivers:
One person hoards everything because they’re afraid there won’t be enough.
Another uses everything for themselves.
But the third knows the source is endless, so they become a channel, freely blessing others because they trust there is always more where that came from.

Another uses everything for themselves.
But the third knows the source is endless, so they become a channel, freely blessing others because they trust there is always more where that came from.
That’s the kind of heart I want to grow. Not because I have unlimited resources, but because I know the One who does.
Maybe that’s what Psalm 23 has been saying all along. The Shepherd doesn’t just provide what we need.
He teaches us to live free from the fear of not having enough.
Reflection
Today, ask yourself one simple question:
Who am I trusting right now?
Sometimes that single question is the first step toward discovering what a life without lack really looks like.
